Fuel Problem

Post  Almondo74 on Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:54 pm

Hi,
Iv had a fuel problem with my gti, it struggles and wont gain revs passed 4-4.5k especially up hills, started by testing the pressure and it seemed to drop to 10psi when struggling, and raise to 40psi when i released the pedal. then back to 30-35 psi.

so i changed the gti fuel pump for a 1L one (smaller in size) and it ran perfectly rev'ed all the way and pressure stayed still at 30psi ish, but wudnt start properly like it was fuel starvation, it wud eventually start with the accel pedal right down.

i put in a primera fuel pump from scrappy as it was similar size and shape, but that turned out to give the exact same problem as the gti pump, im going to try another 2moro but cud this b caused by the fuel pressure regulator??
i do have a spare rail but looks a major op to get it out, removing omp front strut, intake&manifold.

thanks for any advice

Cheers
Ross

have you tested the pump pressure?
if its good the try the rail
you can change it without taking off the mani, prob a few hours if you take it easy, its not good for the back though Smile

Hi,

Can I ask?
When was last time you changed a fuel filter?
You are doing all of the hard work so if I stated something you already carried out..... Embarassed Sorry.

I had same issue with my Mini before.

Its used it to absorb pressure variations in the fuel rails due to injectors opening and closing.

B= pulsation damper.

i put the pressure guage in line, under the bonnet b4 the feed line enters the rail so i take it that measures the pump pressure?
the pressure was fine with a 1L pump but not the gti pump, but it wudnt start properly with the pump so i cudnt leave it in.

and i changed the fuel filter when i brought the car about 8months ago

sorted it and i cudnt believe it was the filter(well done atchi Smile), the shit that came out of it was unbelievable, just need a new 1 now so all good,
but i dont understand its only 8months or less old and the inside of the fuel tank was spotless no bits or anything in there, also dont understand how it ran properly with a 1L pump scratch.
O well fixed now, happy days Smile
