Alternator Problem..?

Hi
Driving home last night I noticed my speedo just stopped working, not sure if thats related but came to start it this morning and battery was dead. It will start with a jump from another car and run fine, but as soon as I turn the lights on it just dies. I'm thinking alternator or nakered battery? Anyone else had this problem before I go out and take the alternator off..
Also, are all swift alternators the same or are gti's specific?

its most likely the battery, any good garage or halfords can test it for you
might be worth checking the earth straps
a mate of mine went out and bought a full setup, alt, battery, belt
he asked me for a hand to fit it and thats when i found the loose wire
as for the spedo, it moves from the cable coming off the top of the gbox
i think the alt is the same as 1.6/vitara, but dont hold me to that

Thanks alot for that buddy.. Kinda hoping it is just the battery, alternator looks like a bit of a nightmare to get to! I'll chuck a different battery on it tomorrow and see what happens, also check over all the wires/connections. I did notice that one of the wires from the battery going to the top of the gearbox had been rubbed away and metal was showing, so prob not helping things..!

i have a gls altanator if you need one im pretty sure they work on the gti
