very disappointed!
having owned my lil GTi for a few weeks now and recently having an engine rebuild prior to me buying it i have done approx 400miles running it in, no crazy driving etc obviously. Firstly, the rocker cover gasket started leaking last week quite bad so on monday morning i topped it up. Now it had mineral running in oil and all i had in my shed was mobil 1 0-30 synthetic which i used about 0.5l. On my way to work that morning i noticed a fair amount of blue smoke from its arse! I put it down to the thin oil i just put in. However i changed the oil and filter on tuesday night after work to 15-40. Ive done 40miles and it still smoking REALLY bad, on accelleration (rings) and even more so on over-run when throttle re-applied (valve stem seals)
so basically, the long and short of it is, i bought the car having had an engine rebuild and now i need to do it again myself
not happy! and the wife went off on one too to add to it lol
oh and plus, i dont know how, where or why but my drivers headlight is broken too
not a good start to swift ownership

Re: very disappointed!
dont give up mate, they're a great little car, you've just been unlucky.
The guy you bought it off probably rebuilt it in his shed with no know how.
If your short on cash, a secondhand engine would be a cheaper option than a full rebuild.

Re: very disappointed!
Stevie - that's the worrying thing., the guy that did it is a mechanic who has his own garage business with his dad!!!
Gary - Been quoted £30+vat for a head gasket set and £69 for a set of rings, it's good being in the trade and knowing people! So It's not an overly costy job it's just thd hassle and time consuming especially when you have 2 kids and a wife that chews your lug when you want to work on ur car after a days work! Thd joys lol
I'm gonna do the valve stem seals in place first and see if that cures it if not I'll strip down and do the rings.

Re: very disappointed!
Nah mate that's the head gasket set - head gasket, inlet/exh mani and rocker cover gaskets, valve stem seals and other "head" seals.
If I do need to do the rings don't worry it'll be done right

Re: very disappointed!
unfortunately cars are sound as seen
id still kick off at the bloke tho, but then i thought it was suspect in the 1st place. why would he rebuild the engine and sell it with hardly any miles........
you said your in the trade so i persume u know what your doing and it will be done right this time.
good luck.

Re: very disappointed!
I thought the same mate but it was for sale a couple months ago with "goosed" engine as I actually contemplated buying it then and rebuilding it then.
He said it was worth more with a running engine so did the work and put it for sale which is fair enough. He is a mechanic so thought it would be sound enough. However im not completely doubting his workmanship hence why I'm gonna do stem seals first as they weren't done so fingers crossed.
Yeh mate I've a mechanic of 11yrs and rebuilt several engines so will be done right

Re: very disappointed!
Use atleast suzuki hgasket and most of the bottom seals, ebay gaskets are jank, they will do the job untill you ask a bit more from the engine ;-)
Steam seals are in us ebay, not to expencive, I got a set of nippon rings a few years back on there aswell £25 all in, sometimes its worth shopppin about online, even if you are in the trade

Re: very disappointed!
Just because hes a mechanic doesnt mean he can build engines. I can do all the things most mechanics do for a living but i wouldnt attemp a full engine rebuild.
Good luck mate, keep us posted on your progress.
and i hear ya on the wife and kid thing
