gti is it SAFE

Post  robinsonj1 on Wed May 12, 2010 9:12 am

my timing belt has slipped a tooth due to the prik of a mechanic who didnt fit it right

the one who is sorting it now said out of curiosity that he would like to know if the gti is a SAFE engine

i.e do the bend vavles etc something like that if timing belt snaps or slips like mine

cheers

i looked on teamswift and redline and some people say it is, some people say it isnt.... but one tooth shouldnt cause any damage i think

Hi,

Gti engine is interierance engine so if you snap cam belt, you could have bent valves.
Saying that I snapped twice. Once with over service period and next with stone getting in between belt and pulley. I didn't have any bent valves or anything.

If you just lost 1 tooth or 3/4 teeth, you will be alright.

Cheers

Just do a compression test. That will give you a clear answer. If not you might need the head rebuilt. I recommend these guys: www.totalengines.com

I snapped a belt once, bent a few exhaust valves. Not much but enough
